Acupuncture
 |
|
Physiotherapists complete a thorough post-graduate training program to be accredited to perform acupuncture. Acupuncture is a way of tapping into your body's healing processes using single-use sterile needles. We are trained to use it gently and safely for muscle and joint pain problems in conjunction with other therapeutic techniques. |
GUNN IMS (Intramuscular Stimulation)
 |
|
Gunn IMS involves the using of sterile disposable acupuncture needles to specifically target taut muscle bands that have contracted and become shortened from distress.
The goal of treatment is to normalize the muscle, affected nerves and provide pain relief. |
Sports Rehab
 |
|
A detailed biomechanical assessment of cyclists, runners, triathletes and golfers. This allows individualized treatment based on the root cause of the patient's problem. |
Real Time Ultrasound
 |
|
Real Time ultrasound involves sending pulses of sound into the body and uses the reflections from the muscle and fascial interfaces to create an image. This cutting edge technology allows you to see if you are isolating your inner corset correctly and effectively.
Once this most basic element of spinal stabilization has been established, these muscles are then integrated into functional or sport specific exercise. You will then be able to successfully incorporate hip, trunk and shoulder strengthening and flexibility into your program for effective prevention and rehabilitative exercise program for low back pain.
What is Core stability? Core stability refers to the strength and coordination of a group of muscles located deep in the Abdominal wall (Transverse Abdominus) and the back (Multifidus). These muscles form a corset and attach to each vertebrae in your lumbar spine. These deep muscles, along with your diaphragm and pelvic floor muscles, create an inner corset to provide stability and control for your lumbar spine.
Low back pain [LBP] or injury inhibits this inner stability corset, leaving the large muscles to attempt to stabilize the spine resulting in unnecessary and excessive spinal compression. As the demands on these large muscles increase (ie. running/walking) the compressive forces on the spine escalate. This poor lumbar stabilization strategy contributes to the recurrence of LBP and is a risk factor for future spinal degeneration and ongoing pain.
Breaking the LBP cycle and recovering from injury requires reactivation and isolation of the inner corset muscles.
Real Time Ultrasound provides essential feedback to the patient on whether an exercise is being done correctly and with the correct sequencing and timing of muscle contractions. The shoulder rotator cuff muscles, the hip inner and outer rotators and the powerful iliopsoas muscle are all imaged well on this machine.
A Real time Ultrasound consultation would benefit anyone who:
• Has suffered an acute low back, thoracic spine or sacroiliac (SI) joint injury
• Has had chronic low back, thoracic spine or sacroiliac (SI) joint pain
• Has had a baby and wishes to return to an exercise program
• Has incontinence
• Any athlete (regardless of level or age) who would like to see if they are recruiting their deep core muscles correctly |
Capnography
 |
|
How are you breathing? Symptoms of altered breathing behaviour include:
• Poor concentration
• Dizziness
• Chest tightness
• Anxiety
• Fatigue
• Muscle tightness
• Abdominal cramping
• Headache
Poor breathing behaviour is a common reaction to stress and can result in hypocapnia (reduced levels of carbon dioxide). The effect of these changes is to reduce blood flow and oxygen delivery to tissues resulting in a variety of symptoms often attributed to stress. Capnography allows us to view and monitor the breath by tracking carbon dioxide levels. It can then be used as biofeedback to train good breathing behaviours. The effect on symptoms is dramatic; it is a powerful stress management tool that also assists with performance in athletic, academic and work-related environments. Sessions are performed by a physiotherapist trained in capnography. |
ETOIMS
 |
|
What is The eToims® Technique?
The eToims® Technique is an advanced diagnostic treatment for both healthy individuals desiring general physical health improvement and enhancement, as well as for individuals suffering from acute and chronic pain. The eToims® Technique targets the trigger points where nerves and muscles meet, causing twitch contractions that stretch and relax damaged muscles at sites all over the body. This provides results superior to traditional methods of physical therapy that only mechanically stimulate superficial surface muscles, far from the muscle layers where injuries lie. Often, a one hour eToims® Technique treatment session will accomplish muscle relaxation and deep muscle pain relief in what may not be possible in several hourly sessions of manual stretch and tissue mobilization therapies.
The eToims® Technique is an ideal treatment for individuals suffering from neck pain and lower back pain that result from sitting at a desk and using a computer, muscle injuries from recreational and professional athletics & fitness, whiplash from car accidents, and other types of nerve-related muscle disorders (fibromyalgia, chronic pain, back pain etc.). The eToims® Technique provides nerve regrowth and regeneration which is in direct opposition to therapies such as epidural injections which seek to destroy the neuromuscular junction.
The eToims® Technique produces painless and pleasurable deep twitch contractions that stretch and relax damaged muscles. This produces an inflow of fresh blood and tissue oxygenation to tired muscles as pain-producing chemicals simultaneously outflow from affected areas. The eToims® Technique is applied by experienced, trained, and certified eToims® Specialists and is successful in treating patients with acute and chronic nerve-related muscle pain, including those who have not responded to other non-invasive and invasive treatments such as spinal injections and/or surgery. The degree of response to The eToims® Technique is inversely proportional to the degree and duration of permanent nerve damage present. eToims® is available for home-use to individuals in the European Union and Canada that wish to improve their overall wellness and total body health, and these individuals should first have their local physiotherapist or physician trained to become eToims® Specialists. Individuals with severe chronic pain are instructed to visit a licensed eToims® Health Care Specialist for ongoing treatment sessions |

Pilates
 |
|
Pilates is a unique systematic exercise approach for general fitness, sport specific training and rehabilitation that increases strength, flexibility, balance and more natural body control.
The system consists of 1000's of exercises, using special equipment - the Reformer, Cadillac, Chair, various Barrels and Small Apparatus - as well as floor work on a Mat.
Pilates develops the body from the "inside-out". Harnessing the deepest abdominal, pelvic floor and spinal muscles, Pilates trains the body to move more efficiently from a profound level. With continued practice over time, an accurate and well balanced Pilates program can diminish faulty postural habits that contribute to chronic problems.
The method originated with German-born Joseph Pilates. It is based on his experiences in rehabilitation and wellness, and on disciplines including weight training, martial arts and yoga. In 1923, Joseph immigrated to New York where he designed and built his original equipment and opened his studio…. which still thrives today.
From the 1930's through the 1980's, Pilates was the "best kept secret" of professional dancers, elite athletes and Hollywood jetsetters. Over the past 20 years as exercise science has evolved, it is increasingly common to find Pilates in physiotherapy clinics, athletic training centers, mainstream fitness clubs and dedicated studios. Today, Pilates is widely accepted and endorsed around the world as a proven functional approach to overall fitness and rehabilitation for men and women of any age.

Pilates For Rehabilitation
Pilates exercises with clinical modifications have been proven to enhance and accelerate recovery from injuries and chronic conditions. By strengthening and balancing the muscles around the joints, musculoskeletal strain and pain are reduced. Undesirable patterns of muscle activation are identified and corrected with equipment and exercises that minimize stress to tissues. Programs are developed to build and reinforce more healthy neuromuscular patterns of movement. |
